The Purpose of the Baptism

Scripture clearly indicates the purpose for the Holy Ghost being given. Acts 1:8 tells us, “But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Spirit is come upon you; and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.” That power was not provided for the disciples’ personal glorification, but for the benefit of others. It would enable them to be witnesses for Christ throughout all the world—to testify of Jesus’ resurrection.

These 120 had been with the Lord since His crucifixion, and thus they were eyewitnesses to the fact that He had risen from the dead. The Great Commission instructed them to go into all the world and preach the Gospel to every creature. The known world at that point in history was not as big as it is now, but the disciples did not have the means of transportation we have today. When they heard the instruction to go into the entire world, they no doubt felt much the same as we would today: How are we going to do that? How are we going to let the whole world know that Jesus is alive?

The infilling of the Holy Ghost was what met that need. Power from the Spirit of God provided courage, boldness, confidence, insight, ability, and authority.

We have the same need today, and the same provision is available. People are still receiving power in their lives through the baptism of the Holy Ghost, and it is still power for service. The one who receives the Holy Ghost will have anointing and ability to witness or testify of Christ with greater power.

The commission He gave to the disciples is the same commission given to us today. We have a responsibility to tell the world that we know Jesus has risen from the dead, that He has changed our lives, and that we have had an encounter with Him. The experience we have with Him is not to be kept to ourselves. The command is to be witnesses of what we have experienced and seen. We will need help from Heaven, so the Lord has promised to send the power we need—the baptism of the Holy Ghost.

Pentecost Sunday 5-20-18

One promise given to us in the Old Testament is found in the book of – Joel 2:28, which tells us “I will pour out my Spirit on all people.” Jesus also in the New Testament says he will send another Counselor, the Spirit of truth (John 16: 5-15).  Acts 2 states that a wind filled the house: breath or wind is a symbol of the Spirit of God. The wind on the day of Pentecost represents the power of God. With evidence of tongues of fire. The picture in Acts seems to be of a single flame that separates and symbolically rests on each of them. And they all began to speak with other tongues as the Spirit enabled them (Acts 2:4).    It symbolized the power that came upon the Christ Followers to do what Jesus did. It also marks the beginning of the new testament church.

This is same power that is available for the Christians today. And I would add, is seriously needed if we truly are serious about evangelizing people and doing the works that Jesus did. Without the empowerment and baptism of   the Holy Spirit as evidenced in Acts 2:4 (speaking with tongues) we lack our full potential of power that was promised in Acts 1:

Acts 1:7-8 7And he said unto them, it is not for you to know the times or the seasons, which the Father hath put in his own power. 8But ye shall receive power, after
that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in
Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of
the earth.

We will begin a series of messages on the “Baptism of Fire” starting May 27th. Plan to join us as we learn more of the person of the Holy Spirit and receive truth from God’s word how being filled and continually filled with the Spirit will enhance the power in our daily walk with Christ in our culture.

The Presence of Jesus

I recently read an article by Minnie McNeal titled “The Presence of Jesus.”

She stated…“When the storms of life are raging in our lives, and the rushing winds and violent waves seem to overtake us, when all hope seems to vanish, where do we turn? No matter the difficulty, no matter the circumstance, it is in the presence of Jesus that we find peace, direction, and calm assurance.”

No matter the difficulty, no matter the circumstance, it is in the presence of Jesus that we find peace, direction, and calm assurance.

She is right, I love that!

I am learning more clearly every day that only in the presence of Jesus; the anointing of the Holy Spirit is released over our lives. My prayer for our Community of Christ Followers here at Saline 1st AG is that we are individually are catching this truth as well. Many people are desiring the anointing of the Holy Spirit but refuse to take time to be in the presence of Jesus regularly. Never forget that it is the anointing that enlarges our spirit and breaks yokes. But first, it the presence of Jesus that opens heaven over our lives that brings the anointing.

Let me encourage you today, if your life seems to be filled with storms that are rushing through your life like violent winds, I would suggest that you take some time to get quiet before the Lord and spend some much-needed time in worship so that there would be an opportunity for the anointing to destroy your yoke, whatever it may be.

Never forget In His (Jesus) presence is fullness.

  1. May 20thHonoring those who have served our county and have paid the ultimate price.

  1. June 2ndfrom 9am – 1pm Will be our Spring Clean Day. Please make plans to join your Saline 1st family as we honor the Lord by caring for His house. All hands-on deck please, we need your help.

  1. June 10th We will be having an all church fellowship dinner following our morning worship. This would be a great opportunity for you to invite a friend or family member along for worship and lunch following.

Do you feel like you’re under attack?

It seems that many are under an all-out attack from the powers of darkness. Many I speak with are experiencing new troubles, new attacks that they have never seen before. The devil knows that his time is short and he is doing all he can to destroy God’s people and to discourage them in their work for the Lord. That same promise the Lord gave the Israelites so many years ago to break bondage is in effect for you today if you will accept it:

“And it shall come to pass in that day, that his burden shall be taken away from off his shoulder, and his yoke from off your neck, and the yoke shall be destroyed because of the anointing.” (Isaiah 10:27).

Down through the ages God has proven Himself as a yoke breaker. Jesus has promised you would learn of Him and find rest unto your soul. Unfortunately, many have been fooled by the enemy, and the load they carry is a yoke of distress and bondage. Jesus’ love, understanding, security and protection is what we need in the day which we live. He is the one that makes the burdens light. Has your load become so heavy you can hardy breathe; does it seem like your burden is taking the very life out of you? Be encouraged today to know that Jesus has paid the price so to could live a life of freedom. My heart’s prayer for you today is that you will experience that freedom today!

Join us this Sunday for worship… and invite a friend… as I share this message “The Burden Will be Removed.”

Power to Witness

The day of Pentecost is for the celebration of the beginning of the modern church as we know it.  We celebrate Pentecost remembering the day which the Holy Spirit was sent (Acts 2:4). When the Holy Spirit came upon the disciples, they began to speak in many languages (tongues). This “power” as Jesus called it was given to the disciples to empower them to be witnesses and spread the word of salvation only through Christ; starting at Jerusalem and taking this gospel message to the world.

We have also have been commissioned by Jesus to be witnesses of his great love and saving power. The Holy Spirit is our helper and the power we need to complete this assignment we have been commissioned with. So here is the question…How are you doing with this assignment Jesus gave us? My prayer for all of us, myself included, is that we will revisit our commitment to be the witness Jesus desires for us to become. I know there are multitudes of people close to us, just waiting for someone to love them enough to bring them this great message of hope and salvation. This great commission can only be accomplished through the “ANOINTING.”

The message I started last week “Guard Your Anointing” will continue this Sunday. Last week we learned that the twofold purpose of the anointing is:

  1. To work in me (changing me).
  2. To work through me (changing the world).

This week I will be focusing on what we must do to guard the anointing in our lives as followers of Jesus.

The presence of the Holy Spirit is growing stronger week by week in our services, lives are being changed. Please take some time before Sunday and pray for our community of Christ Followers and ask the Holy Spirit to continue pouring out of his spirit into our lives. Come prayed up and expecting that God will meet you and your needs as we gather together as the family of God at Saline AG.

Call a friend or family member and invite them to service this Sunday…who knows that this might be the week the Holy Spirit draws them to salvation…through a simple heartfelt invitation from you!

If we keep doing the right things long enough, through the anointing, great things are going to happen here at Saline First AG.

The Anointing

Blessings on the beautiful spring day!

We are living in a day and time where everyone wants to accomplish great things in life. Everyone is chasing success and power. Even in the church people have a strong desire to do the will of God on earth for themselves. But people do not understand that it is not going to be accomplished through your own power or strength. Zechariah 4:6 states that it is not by might nor by power but by the Spirit (who produces the anointing).

The anointing is an empowerment from God through the Holy Spirit which causes the believer to become fruitful, powerful, conquering, successful, spiritual and blessed to accomplish God’s purpose and plan for your life, it’s our spiritual strength. You cannot fulfill God’s purpose and plan for your life without the anointing of the Holy Spirit.

The anointing transforms you from natural to supernatural, from weak to strong and from fearful to faith-filled. The anointing is going to make the difference in your life and in the life of our church. When we begin to tap into that anointing in the days ahead you will experience a lifting off of your shoulders heaviness that the enemy has placed there to keep you bound. If you will allow the anointing to do its job and you will not try to make things happen in your own strength. The Spirit is going to empower you to accomplish the purpose of God for your life and will bring you into a blessed life in Christ Jesus.

I look forward to seeing you this Sunday as we begin teaching on …

                                                  “The Anointing.”

Bring a Friend…take the time to pray and call someone and invite them to worship this week!!!

We are planning for a beautiful memorial service May 20th in our worship service. Please try to have a picture and a little information turned in by May 13th.

  1. I want to thank our incredible ministry team for your faithfulness. Every teacher, church cleaner, usher, worship team member, sound booth member, maintenance helper…EVERY ONE who serves…Thank you for your service to our wonderful assembly. You are appreciated!

Miracles begin with love and UNITY!

Unity matters because it is a fence that protects us from the wolves that want to rip the Church apart. I know that sounds dramatic, but listen to how Paul wrote about it in Romans 16:17–18

“I appeal to you, brothers, to watch out for those who cause divisions and create obstacles contrary to the doctrine that you have been taught; avoid them. For such persons do not serve our Lord Christ, but their own appetites, and by smooth talk and flattery they deceive the hearts of the naive.”

We are a culture accustomed to discord. Our politics are based on two parties in duke-it-out mode. Our news comes to us through two talking heads debating both sides of every story. But I can assure you this is not God’s model for His church. God’s people are meant to be an oasis from the “schism” all around us. I believe Unity in the Church is an evangelism tool. I also believe we can win lost people when they see unity and love among Gods people.

Paul tells us to be on the lookout for those who come against the unity of the Church. Let’s all be determined to check ourselves and see if there are any ways we are committing the “sin of schism. “With Jesus’ clear call to unity in mind, I’d love to urge us as Christ Followers to do all we can abide in unity and build one another up in love. God commands his blessing where there is love and unity…and I desire His blessing, how about you?

  1. Both Donna I will be in the church office on Mondays from about 9am – 1pm until our move. If you need us for anything that would be the best time to see us.

    2. God will provide us a good renter for our house in Grand Rapids quickly.
  1. Please pray for Gods leading and direction as we begin to assemble our ministry team that will join us in the vision we have to reach this community with the love of Jesus. I will be praying and fasting for a youth pastor to join the team as God directs. Please join me in fervent prayer over this matter.

  1. I want to encourage you to Join us this Sunday for Sunday School 9:30am… and also Wednesday night School of the Spirit 7pm…I know you will be blessed.

Easter was amazing, now what?

I would like to thank everyone who helped to make our resurrection celebration such a joy filled day. Easter was amazing now what? So, what are we to do after the celebration of Easter is over? Do we just go about doing the same things that we have been doing up to Easter? Or does the experience of the Easter account change us and shape our living, or does it at least refresh our standing commitment to our faith in Christ?

I believe that the next steps following Easter will be in creating welcoming environments, relationships, and discipleship with people who will be surrendering their lives to Jesus in the days to come and doing what Jesus commanded… ”Go Out” taking the greatest story ever told to lost people. Our expectation needs to be heightened for an outpouring of the presence of Jesus as we make efforts to reach into our community with the message of hope that the resurrection of Jesus has stamped on our lives as Christ Followers. I’m believing for 2018 to be a year of increase and salvation’s for Saline First AG.

John Cuff will be assisting me with teaching our mid-week bible study for the next several weeks. Thank you, John for your willingness to serve.

Donna and I are in the process of getting our home in Grand Rapids wrapped up to rent so we can get home to Saline very soon. Please pray that God will give wisdom as we seek new housing.

Sister Sherry Fortney…and brother Jerry have our personal contact information for any urgent requests until we get relocated. Also, I can be reached through church email  I will be checking this regularly. If you need us we are here for you!

Thank you for your patience as we make this transition. We can hardly wait for our move so we can be where we belong. Our faith is high and we are believing God that our days ahead are going to filled with His glory and miracles. We will see you Sunday!

Jeremiah 29:11

Saline Welcomes New Pastor

Glenn and Donna Smith were visiting our church this week trying to meet as many people as they could. People came to meet them Wednesday and Thursday nights and Saturday. More came this morning to hear him preach and to vote on whether or not to hire him as our next pastor. We are pleased to report the church membership voted to hire him as our next senior pastor.

Thanks to all who made the extra effort to get to know them both and to pray about the decision. Thanks for all the participation in this event.

Pastor Glenn starts with our church April 1 and will be preaching Easter Sunday. He and Donna are making preparations to move from Bad Axe to the area and their move may take a couple weeks. Once he moves to the area, he will have normal office hours at the church and you can come see him at the church office once that happens. We will let you know when that begins.

Thanks to everyone who was patient while we searched for a new pastor. Thanks to everyone who continued to faithfully server the church in whatever capacity God called you to serve. We appreciate and honor your service. We thank you.

Thanks to Curt Dalaba who came to officiate the business meeting.

Jerry for the church board and pulpit committee.
