John 11

There is a story behind Horatio Stafford’s well known song.

His wife was Anna. One of their son’s died of ammonia.

They lost many things in the great Chicago fire.

Nov. 21 1873 Anna and the children were on an ocean liner from Chicago to Europe. The ship collided with other ship and Ann bid for her children and took them to the deck and prayed that God would spare them. 226 passengers were lost including 4 Spafford children. Anna was found by a rescue boat clinging to debris. She sent a short telegram to her husband: “Saved alone” Horatio took the next ship and four days into the trip, the Captain informed him they had reached the place where the children died.  That is when Horatio wrote, “It is well with my soul.” He met with his wife and God eventually blessed them with three more children.

In 1881 Horatio moved to Jerusalem where he lived for the rest of his life.

Five Lessons from John 11

If we put our faith in the Captain of the Army of the Host of Heaven, He will guide us through the troubled waters. Faith comes by hearing, and hearing the word of God

1) Satan will lie to you when you are in trouble, and try to convince you the situation is terrible.

When Lazarus was sick and then died, the devil would say that Lazarus is gone forever. Then enemy will try to break your faith down. You need to get the truths of God’s word into your heart. When the devil was tempting, the Lord in the wilderness, Jesus quoted back the word of God that he had learned. When we submit ourselves to God and resist the lies, the devil must flee. Know the word, recognize the lies and resist the Lies.

2) Know who to send for. James 11:2-3; Mary and Martha sent for Jesus. We can fix many things ourselves, but there are some things we can not fix. When my Godfather, Virgil was in the hospital, he was having kidney failure from being a severe alcoholic for many years. That habit ended one night when he came drunk to a church meeting and got saved. Brother Barker reminded my dad of that time and said that Virgil can heal him. That night God totally healed him from complete Kidney failure and the next day there was nothing wrong with them. They worked fine for the rest of his life (14 more years).

3) Sometimes the healing is instant and sometimes we have to wait. James 11:4-7 Jesus made them wait. You may be doing everything that you need to do and still have to wait.

4) His delay does not mean that God is not attentive to your situation. God may be setting up the situation so that He is the only one to get the glory. God is interested in you being completed. He is not  comfortable. Remember Daniel when he had to wait 21 days. The response was sent right away, but Daniel had to wait for the answer to arrive.

5) You need to take Jesus back to the place where you suffered your loss. In vs 39 we read, Jesus was taken to the tomb and Jesus told them to roll away the stone. The response was to warn Jesus that he seems to be overlooking a serious stench problem. Maybe they were concerned that Jesus was going to make a fool of himself. Notice that in this situation, Jesus did not move the stone Himself. By moving the stone, they were confirming their faith in Jesus. Jesus

Jesus is a personal savior. It is time for Jesus to revive the Spirit of God within you, and along with that the power of God, and your health, and the great commission to go into all the world making disciples.

It is time to come out of the tomb of being dead in sin. Jesus says, “Come out. Loose him and let him go.”

If you know Jesus as you Lord, heaven is your future. If you have not repented and put your trust in Him, eternal punishment is your choice, and just reward.

What is going on in your life that needs revival into the kingdom of heaven? Come to the alter for prayer.

Phillipians 4:7

Next week we will talk about the anointing. Tell three people, it is not time to give up. Just keep believing.

    Remodeled
I was so disappointed last night, because my wife and I love corned beef hash.
My wife and I went to Ann Arbor and found out the Hash Bash was for a different group of hash lovers.
You need at least one good unsaved friend.
80% of people came to church because they were invited.
    Tell someone this week.
How would you like to go out to lunch with me Sunday? Great, we will go right after church.

Let’s be real and let the spirit of God have his way.

    John 21: 2-19
    Peter said I’m going fishing.

Remodeling spending is going to be 340 billion this year.
    7.25% increase over last year.
No matter how bad your broken down home is, the designer can plan and the carpenter build a place from that old home that will be beautiful.

I quit school after 8th grade, and left home at age 16. I had started dating my wife at age 15.
When God got a hold of me, I heard that God has a plan for me, and I went to the alter. God changed that old house.

Peter was in the courtyard the night Jesus was taken to be put on trial. Three times he was accused of knowing the Lord. Jesus caught his eye, and the rooster crowed confirming the prophecy from Jesus had come to pass.
Peter recognized that he had come up short and the devil was using that situation to destroy Peter’s confidence in serving Jesus.

One of the first thing Jesus did after being resurrected was to come see his friends and restore the relationship. Jesus gave us the supreme example for never writing anyone off.
Jesus sat with Peter and he initiated a restoration for His relationship with Peter.
Vs 12-13 Jesus asked if Peter loves Jesus more than he loves the cares of the world?
Your old life will not bring you joy

Luke 16:13 — You can not serve both God and your old way of living

Sometimes things need to done the right. My son went into the military and he had a wonderful drill instructor. The sergeant did not let my son choose his own way of doing things.

Jesus did not leave Peter to his own decision. Jesus pressed him by asking if he had agape love for jesus. Twice Peter replied that he phileo loved Jesus. So, Jesus finally asked so you say you kinda like hanging out with me (phileo love) and Peter’s heart broke. Peter confessed that he does really agape love Jesus. At that point, Jesus commissioned Peter to serve and love Jesus’s family.
A few weeks later, Peter proved that he was no longer holding back from trusting Jesus. He had been too timid to admit knowing Jesus on the night of his trial, but he had been transformed into a person completely trusting in and serving Jesus.
The Lord knew Peter would fail. He knew we would fail too. He has given each of us gifts for the works of service to supply the whole body.
Some of us have become mentally and emotionally exhausted. Sometimes we think if we don’t get out of here we will go crazy.
Pastor, I wan you to pray for me because my mind is under such a strong attack. If you are able, come stand at the alter.

Coming together in fellowship is the way the church grew in Acts. We need that time together.
Thank you Father that your word is alive. Release our faith for miracles in our lives. We bind every spirit not serving you.

1 Now a,1the first day of the week came Mary Magdalene,
early when it was yet dark, unto the sepulcher,
and saw the stone taken away from the tomb.
2 Then she ran, and came to Simon Peter, and to the
other disciple, whom Jesus loved, and said unto them,
They have taken away the Lord out of the sepulcher,
and we know not where they have laid him.
3 Peter therefore went forth, and the other disciple,
and they came unto the sepulcher.
4 So they ran both together, but the other disciple
did outrun Peter, and came first to the sepulcher.
5 And he stooped down, and saw the linen clothes
lying: yet went he not in.
6 Then came Simon Peter following him, and went
into the sepulcher, and saw the linen clothes lie,
7 And the kerchief that was upon his head, not
lying with the linen clothes, but wrapped together
    in a place by itself.
8 Then went in also the other disciple, which came
first to the sepulcher, and he saw it, and believed.
9 For as yet they knew not the Scripture, That
he must rise again from the dead.
10 And the disciples went away again unto their
    own home.
11 ¶ bBut Mary stood 1without at the sepulcher
weeping: and as she wept, she bowed herself into
    the sepulcher,
12 1And saw two Angels in 2white, sitting, the one
at the head, and the other at the feet, where the body
    of Jesus had lain.
13 And they said unto her, Woman, why weepest
thou? She said unto them, They have taken away 1my
Lord, and I know not where they have laid him.
14 1When she had thus said, she turned herself
back, and saw Jesus standing, and knew not that
    it was Jesus.
15 Jesus saith unto her, Woman, why weepest
thou? whom seekest thou? She supposing that he
had been the gardener, said unto him, Sir, if thou
hast borne him hence, tell me where thou hast laid
him, and I will take him away.
16 Jesus saith unto her, Mary. She turned herself, and
said unto him, Rabboni, which is to say, Master.

I remember praying for food one winter blizzard day, and the spirit of God reminded me to have faith.
I was too proud to ask the church congregation for help. There was a knock on the door, 8 o’clock at night. The worship leader came in her little Ford Escort loaded with groceries. I asked what was going on. When I was praying to prepare the worship service, and God told me to bring groceries now. The blizzard did not matter.

    Mar 25, 2018
    Palm Sunday Then and Now
What happened when Jesus came into Jerusalem
Your perspective changes your interpretation of what you experience.

    Perception is dependent on perspective.

Go to the village and find a donkey —Matthew 21:2-9
Why did the donkey not freak out. That was a miracle.
The scriptures promised that the messiah would come into town on a donkey.

These were people living in poverty and servitude. Can you imagine their joy?
They expected Jesus to overthrow the oppression of Rome. They were expecting a military hero.
Jesus himself had proclaimed that he came to set the oppressed free.
    Luke 4:18

The people were expecting that Jesus would continue to do miracles—heal the sick. raise the dead, restore the lame. It would have been like universal health care on steroids. Lepers would all be healed. Many were thrilled to have the great physician king.

Some were enthusiastic about getting all the free food everyone needed from just a few fish and a small farm. Like food stamps on steroids. The country could become rich from selling all the extra food.

They were looking forward to having a benevolent king who would meet all their needs, and require nothing in return.

That is what they expected to see. It was wrong. It was exciting, but wrong.
Jesus came to set people free from sin not from Rome. For it is by grace through faith. Freedom from sin is far better than Roman oppression, and it lasts forever.

People today are still bound up by many things. Jesus will still set you free from the bonds to sin and addiction. He provides healing by his sacrificial love.
Is. 53:5 Pierced for our transgressions, wounded…

In the time of Jesus, you would have needed to see him in person where he was.

The most important healing we need is spiritual healing: a restoration to fellowship with God, Father.
Love, joy, peace,… -Galatians 5:22-23 These are worth more than money.
If you can not control yourself, what good is a fortune?

When people realized that Jesus was not meeting their expectations, they wanted to crucify him.
Next week we have a new shepherd coming next week also, and we have expectations about the new move of God that they are bringing. Reality check, what is God bringing and expecting of us.
He expects us to be prayer warriors. When we seek His face, and bring Hm honor, He will draw all people to Himself.

We need to be Christ’s hand extended to the community. We are the hands of Christ. Look for ways to bless our community and our contacts.

We need to give generously in obedience to God by stepping out in faith. Put your money where mouths are. If we are not giving sacrificially like Christ, can we really be called his followers?

Our choice is going to be asking, God, how can I serve? What can I do to bless the church, pastor, and community.  Ask God to give us His perspective.
Do spiritual warfare. Ask God to give you love for the people in your church.

Seek His face for refreshing and renewal.
We can love, support, and encourage one another in faith.
Change is always at least a little uncomfortable. Pray for grace, patience.
Let’s take time new pray and seek God’s face. He has blessings ready and waiting for us.

Wednesday Night Bible Study with Pastor Glenn Smith
    Jeremy 29:11
God has a plan and he is coming soon.
We are excited about what the Lord has done through our lives.
Some times it feels like we have been going through the wine press.
    God is our healer
Have you ever met someone who is full of himself.
A guy paid big money for a fancy painted portrait.
The artist revealed the portrait and the man was very upset. He said the painting does not do him justice. The artist replied that you do not need justice, you need grace and mercy.
In my quiet time, I have been reading through the new testament
    John 8:1-
Dawn is early in the morning. The teachers brought a woman caught in the act of adultery.
They were using the question to trap the Lord.
    We pray for strengthened faith.
Augustine of Hippo was a theologian and he wrote, The two were left alone, a wretched woman and mercy. Lev. 20:10 says both are to be put to death. It is possible that the man involved was used to set up the woman for the purpose of trapping Jesus.
We all know what it feels like to be caught in sin. The devil is a lier.
Picture Jesus saying to one and then another after looking them in the eyes with a gaze that saw right through them and then saying if you are without sin, go ahead and throw the first stone.
There was a story about Disney World and a girl who’s adoptive family left her behind when they went to visit. She usually thought that it was her fault that she was left behind. She began a month of rebellion, to inspire the rejection she was used to. She was confronted, and she was told that she was going because she was a part of the family. She got worse, and they went anyway. That night she admitted that she did not get to go because she deserved it, but she finally got to go because she was her father’s child.
Believe that you are who God says you are and you are in relationship with him because of His love and grace, not because of our fine works.
Allow God to flow through us.
Bring every sin, guilt and shame that you have in to the church.
Understand that God needs to put a fresh burden in our hearts for those who are separated from God.
God will bring in people who are way different than us. We need to get ready. Sinners will come.

    Jeff Hlavin’s Message
Jeff Hlavin, district superintendant, has been feeding us advice and candidates for our search to identify the next pastor here. He was a church pastor for 25 years, before taking the district position.
Pastor’s leave for various reason’s. These days change happens rapidly. We often need God’s help in adjusting. Our attitude toward the change makes a big difference in our ability to cope.
Continued change is the the only thing that is unchanging.
Remember cassette tapes and rabbit ear TV’s with three channels? I am 68.
Some change comes by matter of our own choices. Other things happen by other people’s choices.
Imagine Mary and Joseph being told they must travel to their home of family origin after already learning that she was pregnant as a virgin.
The most contented and well adjusted in life are those who accept life on its own terms and learn to accommodate. Jesus himself has been the instigator of major changes in our lives.
In the early 70s, I was a hippy attending U of M hanging out with SDS and marxist groups. I was unchurched. I thought an alter was a place for sacrificing virgins to volcanos in a bad movie. I had heard of Jesus about like hearing of George Washington. I know what it is like to be deaf and blind to the gospel. My wife knew before we were married that she wanted to live with someone serving the Lord in ministry. Christmas eve 1971, we had been broken up for a few months. She wanted to talk with me about Jesus. I reacted like an angry jerk.
Later I remember thinking, even if I could give my heart to Jesus, who I thought was a dead guy, what would he want with it.
When and evangelist said you need the holy spirit if you want more power in your life. I thought, power to the people, now someone is talking my language. I went forward and in a moment of honesty, I said if you are real, I want to know you. The Holy Spirit picked me up and dropped me on the floor and I began laughing, crying and speaking in tongues.
The next day I went to a party scheduled with my friends, gathered them together in a room and told them what happened to me. They asked what does that mean, and I said I don’t know, but I think it means now I am a Christian.
    Luke 5:29-39
In verse 30 the question was asked just to find fault, not to learn something.
Jesus answers with a word picture about doctors coming to those who are sick.
When I went to church, me and my friends did not look like the church folks, and I expected that they would love use. They did. (It was a learning curve.)
    Quote from George McCloud:
I simply argue that the cross be raised again in the center of the marketplace as well as on the steeple of churches. I want to recover the truth that Jesus was not crucified on an altar between two candlesticks, but on a garbage heap at a crossroads of the world, a cosmopolitan crossroads where they had to describe who He was in Latin, in Greek and in Hebrew, where soldiers gambled and cynics talked smut, and thieves curse, and soldiers gamble — because that is where He died and that is what He died about. And that is where Christ’s people ought to be and what Church people ought to be about.”
I worked at Ford on midnights for about 3.5 years when I got saved. An associate there asked if I got religious, and I said no, but I told him what happened. I offered to pray with him, but he did not think he could do that at work. So, I told him, that what to pray at home and I told him that Jesus could fix his heroin addiction. Three days later, I found out it work.
As we get older, the temptations we face are different, and the move of the spirit will be different too.
Old wine skins have lost their elasticity. Putting in new wine will destroy the wine and the the wine skins.
We don’t want to dismiss everything old
What would ministry look like if we were to reinvent ministry. What would the spirit say about Zero Base church?
The Holy Spirit is the biggest change agent in the world. Style and form are variable.
When ducks hatch, they will emotionally attach to the first meaningful mother figure. That is how we tend to be about the style of church we had when we got saved.
70 - 75% of all people serving the Lord made their initial commitment before the age of 18. That is why I want to attend church that is reaching the young people.
Old wine skins are like your used shows, there is no reason to distrust them and they are comfortable. We have emotional carpet diviots like the spots where we usually keep the Lazy-Boy chair in the TV room.
Even the most cutting edge wine skins will become old wine skins eventually.
    Ask:
How willing am I to be focused on the core priorities of the Kingdom of God?
What kind of “new wine” does the Lord wish to pour into me in order to fulfill His priorities?
What “wineskins” of mine need to be “made fresh?”

The Most Important Thing in this World
This is my last regular sermon at Saline Assembly of God.
Next week will be a special service for my last Sunday as pastor here.
    Matthew 4
18 As Jesus was walking beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon called Peter and his brother Andrew. They were casting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen. 19 “Come, follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will send you out to fish for people.” 20 At once they left their nets and followed him.
21 Going on from there, he saw two other brothers, James son of Zebedee and his brother John. They were in a boat with their father Zebedee, preparing their nets. Jesus called them, 22 and immediately they left the boat and their father and followed him.
    Matthew 4:18-
It was not difficulty for me to identify what I wanted to leave with you for my last sermon.
This is my one overriding message:
There is nothing in this world,on this earth, or that this world has to offer you that is more important than your personal relationship with Jesus Christ. Not job, spouse, children, grand children nor reputation that is more important than your personal relationship to Jesus Christ. Everything flows from that relationships. The health of that relationship dictates how much you love Him.
Most important commandments are: Love the Lord your God with all your heart, and love your neighbor as yourself.
Study to show yourself approved. Rightly dividing the word. Your interaction with the words of the bible flow out of your relationship with Jesus Christ. Your belief in prayer comes from your relationships from Jesus.
Whatever acts of service you do will be an outflow of your relationship with Jesus.
Jesus’ last message at the last supper was done with a towel and the washing of feet. That is our example of how to serve. If we reject that example, we relegate ourselves to the realm of pew christians.
What I hope you will always remember: There is nothing this world has to offer you than your relationship with Jesus Christ. We are not citizens of this world. You are an immigrant. We are just passing through. Be careful how much you get wrapped up in the cares of this life. There are indeed wonderful things in this world for you to enjoy. Do not make that the central focus of your life.
Some have or will suffer abuse or ill treatment on account of their Christian faith.
At my father in laws funeral I reminded people that we have not lost Rod, we know exactly where he is. He has been called home to be with Jesus.
If you live for everything that this world has to offer, it is absolutely a loss when you die. If you live for Christ, to die is gain.
You can be successful in every walk of life, but if you do not have the presence of Jesus Christ in your life, you have nothing.
36 For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?
37 Or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?
    Mark 8:36-37
Many Christians today live in a way that makes it clear the word of God is only operating in the background shadows of their lives.
Look at what people talk about our spend their money on to see what is important to them.

Do your work heartily as unto the Lord, rather than from man

I have plains to bless you.
Then you will call upon me and I will listen
You find me when you seek me with all your heart.
All of the big questions in life: Origin of Universe, Meaning of Life.
And secondary issues: Issues of gender and human rights.
All boil down to one question for you. Are we our own or do we belong to someone else.
If there is a God, He is the potter and we are the clay.
For us there is nothing but that clay in the universe.
